Making an accident claim for compensation

Your guide to making an accident claim for compensation

Had an accident that was not your fault? Unsure what to do or where to turn to for help? Read our brief guide that will educate you on making a compensation claim for any personal injury you have suffered in an accident.

Accident Advice Helpline understands that accidents can be stressful and inconvenient. This guide gives you useful information on what to do in the unfortunate event of you being involved in an accident and what you will need to do if you are making an accident claim for compensation.

    Get details

Regardless of the type of accident you are involved in it is important to obtain as much information as you can about the accident.

    Car accident:

    • Driver’s name and licence details
    • Car registration, make and model
    • Insurance company name, policy number and contact details
    • Incident number of police report
    • Witness details
    • Photographic evidence

    Accident at work:

    Open Claim Calculator

    • Report the accident to your manager
    • Enter the incident in the Accident book
    • Take the details of anyone else involved and witnesses
    • Photographic evidence

    Slip, trip or fall

    • Report the accident to the Council or owner of the property
    • Photographic evidence
    • Witness details

With all accidents you should also write down an account of exactly what happened. Try to be as detailed as possible and draw a sketch if you can.

If there are any witnesses it is important that you obtain their details, including their name, address, telephone number and email address. When making an accident claim your personal injury solicitor will contact them for their account of the accident. This may be useful evidence and support for your claim.

Take photographs of the accident scene and any injuries that were caused by the accident.

    See a doctor

It is important that you see a doctor or medical professional for any personal injury. Not only will you receive expert care and treatment, but your medical records will act as evidential support when making an accident claim.

Make sure you keep a note of your injuries and any other symptoms you may have. Also keep a note of any medication you are given. Keep all of your receipts as you may be able to recover any costs that have resulted from the accident.
