The long term effects of being involved in a motorbike accident

The long term effects of being involved in a motorbike accident can be far more devastating than is often realised. Of course, to some extent, it depends on the severity of your injuries, but there is also the emotional impact to consider.

It can be months later, as victims come to terms with their injuries, that depression or post traumatic stress disorder set in. These conditions can cause mood swings and anxiety as well as flashbacks to the accident, and physical problems, which to the victim are very real.

If you have suffered a serious injury in a motorbike accident, and then get emotional problems as well, life can become very difficult for you and those close to you.

    Needing carers

There are several serious injuries that could mean you are no longer able to take care of yourself. The obvious one is brain injuries. Even relatively mild brain injuries can mean you cannot take care of your own affairs and need 24-hour care.

But if you were to lose your sight in an accident, the same situation could arise. You could also suffer severe emotional upset when you realise that you will not see your children or grandchildren grow up, that you will not see the faces of your loved ones again.

    Changing your life

Your injuries may not be this serious, but that does not mean your life will not be changed beyond recognition. If you lose a limb, or are badly burned by the engine of your bike, you may not be able to return to work. This could mean you go from being employed full-time, to doing nothing. That can be a big shock to the system, especially when it’s on top of the trauma you have suffered because of the accident.

Even milder injuries can have profound long-term effects. It is not unusual for riders to be scared of going on the roads again, whether on a bike or in a car.

Getting your life back on track

If someone else has caused all these awful things to happen, you morally deserve, and are legally entitled to, compensation. Not only will the money help with your finances, and help you to cope a little better with your injuries, it can also ensure the person who caused your accident takes more care in the future, which will hopefully stop them causing someone else to suffer the same fate as you.

If you have found yourself in this situation, then get in touch with Accident Advice Helpline without delay. We have been dealing with compensation claims for all types of accidents and injuries for over 15 years, and we are here to help you too.
