How long does it take to get compensation?

People who are involved in personal injury compensation claims frequently ask solicitors ‘How long does it take to get compensation?’ Unfortunately there is no answer to this as it is virtually impossible to predict how long it will take.

How long does it take to get compensation if the other person admits responsibility?

If the other person admits that they are to blame for your accident and so your injury, then the process will be relatively short and should take between three and six months. The only problem with this is that you may not be offered a reasonable sum in compensation and you might decide to take the matter to court. This can take a year or more.

How long does it take to get compensation after an accident?

When you go to a personal injury or accident solicitor you will be asked to provide information about your accident, such as:

    • The date and time of your accident
    • The location
    • The weather conditions and quality of light (if it was a road accident)
    • Names and contact details of witnesses to the accident
    • Details of the medical treatment you received and
    • When the doctor thinks you will be fully recovered or what his or her prognosis is.

Your solicitor will then make a case and inform the person responsible in writing that you are filing a personal injury claim. They have ninety days, usually, in which to reply.

However, your solicitor will advise you not to proceed with any claim until you are fully recovered or until your doctor can say what future medical treatment and care you may need. This is because if your injuries are severe, you may need care for the rest of your life, and compensation needs to cover the cost of this plus loss of earnings, both past and future. Compensation will also cover the loss of quality of life and the pain, distress and suffering caused by your injuries. This is why the question, ‘How long does it take to get compensation?’ cannot be answered.
