    Food poisoning claims

    It does not matter if you live in Stuston or anywhere else in the UK — food poisoning can happen at any place and any time. It can make you really ill, and if you have ever suffered from it then you will not what we mean. If someone else caused you to suffer, you may want to consult with an injury lawyer in Stuston about making a personal injury claim.

    Bacteria and viruses are the main reasons for food poisoning. In the right conditions, they will thrive, breed and spread very quickly. There are ways to try and reduce the risks, for example:

    • Store food at the correct temperature, taking notice of any recommendations on packaging;
    • Keep all work and cooking area clean;
    • Don’t let food be cross contaminated — always clean surfaces and utensils between preparing different food to avoid this;
    • Don’t let food pass its use-by date — it is there for a reason;
    • Don’t let someone who is ill or has dirty hands handle the food;
    • Make sure the food is cooked properly; and
    • Avoid keeping cooked food at warm temperatures for a prolonged time.

    Sometimes, food is contaminated before it reaches the end user, and this is not always apparent. In this case, it will make you ill with food poisoning and you should discuss it with an injury lawyer in Stuston if the contamination was not your fault.

    Certain foods are more likely to cause food poisoning

    Some foods need extra care and attention, because they are more likely to become contaminated. For example:

    • Raw eggs;
    • Pate;
    • Pork and poultry;
    • Raw meat;
    • Soft cheeses;
    • Cooked sliced meats;
    • Pre-packed sandwiches;
    • Unpasteurised milk;
    • Sausages and burgers;
    • Kebabs; and
    • Raw shellfish.

    These foods, if not prepared properly in any meal, could cause food poisoning if they are contaminated.

    Most cases of food poisoning our bodies will fight, and will clear up on their own within a few days. Until you feel well enough, you should rest, have lots of sips of water and not eat any other food. When you feel ready to eat again, you should start with foods that are easy to digest, such as toast.

    However, it can be much more serious, causing damage to the central nervous system and even death at its worst. If your food poisoning does not start to improve after a couple of days, you should seek medical attention in case it is one of the more virulent strains.
