Situated by the River Taw, North Tawton is a well-loved town in the county of Devon, England. For such a small place, the town has quite the extensive list of famous connections – some of which might surprise you.
- William Budd was born in the town in 1811, and went on to become a medical researcher (his father paved the way, as he was the town’s surgeon). Budd’s research into typhoid during an epidemic in the town led to the discovery that it was passed on through contagion – specifically through drinking infected water. The discovery revolutionised national sanitation rules, and improved public health standards.
- In 2005, the town was chosen to be the set of Jam & Jerusalem, the Jennifer Saunders television series. The town was renamed Clatterford for the show, and many of the locals were recruited as extras.
- Jam & Jerusalem wasn’t the only time the town was featured on TV, as the nearby Den Brook Wind Farm, and the local populace, was filmed for a BBC documentary called Wind Farm Wars in 2011.
