One of the most significant battles in Scottish history is the Battle of Bannockburn. It occurred in 24 June 1314 and was a part of a series of battles that made up the Wars of Scottish Independence. Today it is remembered as one of the iconic stories in Scottish history.

The battle was fought between the King of Scots, Robert Bruce and the English King Edward II. Edward led his army into Scotland with the intention of taking back Stirling Castle which would be a vital stronghold in any attempt to take Scotland.

However, before Edward’s army could get to Stirling Castle they were stopped by Robert Bruce’s army in Bannockburn. The battle lasted for two days and was characterised by Edward’s army repeatedly forcing the English army back with their units of spearmen. At the end of the second day, the English found that they were trapped by the terrain and were thus routed by King Edward’s army.

The legacy of the battle is strong and for the Scottish people it brings to mind the values of freedom, triumph and independence against the odds.
