    Kingston upon Thames claims

    Kingston upon Thames has a healthy, bustling retail sector. However, the element of manual handling in the retail industry sometimes results in personal injuries being sustained, which is when we here at Accident Advice Helpline are often asked to help people with the raising of their Kingston upon Thames claims for compensation.

    The retail sector is an important employer here in the UK, employing approximately 3 million people. While the retail sector is not thought of as being a dangerous industry in which to work, accidents which cause personal injury do happen quite frequently. Common sources of accidents include:

    • Slips, trips and falls;
    • Manual handling incidents; and
    • Incidents involving on-site vehicles.

    Advice that could help to avoid some Kingston upon Thames claims

    The majority of manual handling injuries result from lifting. Although there are a number of mechanical aids around, such as forklift trucks, a certain amount of manual handling is still required. If members of staff are not correctly trained, they can sustain back injuries.

    The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) issue several publications regarding manual handling, in particular correct lifting techniques. Their advice when executing a manual lift is as follows:

    • Take some time to think about the lift before proceeding;
    • Adopt a stable position, with your feet planted firmly apart;
    • Flex your knees and keep your back as straight as possible;
    • Keep the load close in to your waist;
    • Try not to twist or lean sideways during the lift;
    • Keep your head up and look ahead where you’re going;
    • Move smoothly; and
    • Don’t try to lift anything which is too heavy.

    Employers should ensure that all personnel are appropriately trained in the correct way to carry out a lift. Publications from the HSE should be made available for all manual handling staff, and posters displaying the correct techniques should be displayed around the warehouse or store areas.
