Skinningrove is a coastal village in North Yorkshire and was originally a fishing village, with agricultural land around it. However, during the 19th century it became a centre for the mining of ironstone and smelting. A jetty was built in order for heavy cargo to be transported by sea and this type of industry continued into the 1970’s. The fishing tradition seems to have also continued as in 2003 an oar-fish was caught at Skinningrove which weighed in at 140 pounds and it was 11 feet 4 inches long. Unfortunately before scientists could examine this rare specimen, it had been cut into steaks. Chris Killip, a photographer chronicled the life of Skinnington villagers, whom he described as “fiercely independent” and this film was released in early 2013. The film’s release may have attracted tourists to this village, but it is unlikely that there are many injury solicitors in Skinningrove.
