Have you suffered painful whiplash and need to make a personal injury claim? Call our injury solicitors in Jervaulx

Whiplash is a condition which is well documented as a common injury caused through being involved in road traffic accidents. Many passengers, as well as drivers, are affected by whiplash following a road traffic collision, particularly one involving a rear-end shunt.

    What is whiplash?

Whiplash is caused by the sudden, violent and jerking movement of the head and neck. This trauma to the delicate soft tissues of the neck can cause them to become ruptured, torn and damaged, causing whiplash. However, it is important that whiplash is diagnosed by a medical professional soon after the accident to rule out other more serious injuries. Whiplash symptoms usually take time to develop following an accident, and may not be apparent for 12 to 36 hours after the event.

    Diagnosing whiplash

A medical professional should be consulted following any injury or trauma to the head or neck. This is to establish any injuries which may develop and treat them effectively as soon as possible after an accident. A diagnosis of whiplash is usually given following an examination of the neck, its range of movement and a history of the accident and resulting symptoms.

    Treating whiplash

Whiplash is treated with rest and painkillers initially to allow the tissues to settle and any damage to subside. A neck brace may be provided to support the neck muscles and allow movement. Physiotherapy may be offered to increase the range of movement and aid healing. Always follow medical advice and don’t be tempted to rely on the neck brace for extensive periods of time, as this may slow recovery and limit movement.
