Had a severe head injury? Speak to the injury solicitors in East Lothian!

Severe head injuries can cause devastating and life long symptoms which may alter a person’s personality and abilities forever. The effects of a severe head injury may not be apparent for some time following an accident.  The casualty will require intensive treatment and rehabilitation, in order to ensure that they can make the best possible recovery from their injuries.

    What causes severe head injuries?

Severe head injuries may be the result of accidents such as:

    • road traffic accidents
    • riding accidents
    • motorbike accidents
    • cycling accidents
    • industrial accidents
    • workplace accidents
    • trauma to the head following an assault or violence
    • sporting accident involving a high contact sport such as boxing or rugby
    • a fall from height

    Treating severe head injuries

Severe head injuries require urgent assessment and treatment by a trained medical practitioner such as a paramedic or doctor.  On the scene of the accident, an assessment will be conducted on the casualty to record their response to stimuli, their level of consciousness and their level of response.  If they are unconscious, then they will be transferred rapidly to an Accident and Emergency department for further assessment and treatment.  If they stop breathing, then CPR may be undertaken.

The Glasgow Coma Scale is used to assess the level of their head injury and a score of 8 or less denotes a serious head injury as the casualty is unlikely to be conscious.

A CT scan and MRI scan may be undertaken to establish the cause of any internal bleeding and to locate the source of a bleed prior to surgery. Any pressure on the brain caused by a build up of fluid in the skull can cause the brain to swell and press downwards on the spinal column, which is fatal.  Any bleeding risks the likelihood of permanent brain damage developing which is a risk, that has to be identified and treated quickly, if a bleed is found.
