Have you developed whiplash as the result of an accident? Speak to injury solicitors in East Horsley to make your claim!

Whiplash is a common injury that is associated with road traffic accidents, particularly those which involve multiple vehicle collisions and rear end shunts. However, whiplash isn’t an injury that is exclusive to accidents that occur on the roads.

It can also be the result of:

    • falls from height
    • some heavy object knocking your head
    • riding accidents
    • motorcycle accidents
    • cycling accidents

Whiplash symptoms generally become apparent to the casualty 6-12 hours following the accident.  Any injury to the head or neck should always be investigated by a medical practitioner to rule out serious damage to the nervous system.

    Symptoms of whiplash include:

    1. pain over the neck muscles
    2. stiffness of the neck
    3. headaches
    4. nausea
    5. dizziness
    6. restricted movement of the neck and head
    7. lethargy
    8. depression

    Diagnosing whiplash

Whiplash differs from other injuries in that is has a delayed onset.  If pain is apparent at the scene of an accident, then it is unlikely to be whiplash and will require diagnosis and treatment at a hospital.  A medical practitioner can diagnose whiplash from taking a history and examining the casualty. Whiplash is caused by a sudden and violent movement of the neck forwards, backwards or sideways.  This movement causes the ligaments and muscles of the neck to be stretched and torn, resulting in pain and discomfort.

    Treating whiplash

Whiplash symptoms may settle on their own with rest and painkillers for the pain and discomfort.  However, if symptoms don’t settle then physiotherapy may be offered to improve movement and function.  A neck brace may be given to offer support to the neck and head whilst moving, but this should not be relied upon as it can hinder recovery.
