Prevent pneumonia after an injury – injury solicitors in Carrbridge

If you are not able to get medical help immediately after an accident where you have been badly injured, then it is possible that you can get pneumonia. Pneumonia can actually be more life threatening than your injuries if it is not prevented and if you do not make it to a hospital quickly. Here are some ways to prevent someone else from contracting pneumonia.

    • Assess for head, neck or spinal injuries before you do anything else. Someone with one of these injuries should not be moved, and this will mean you need to treat them differently to how you would treat someone with a different type of injury. Look for a bent or twisted body which indicates damage to the back or neck, and see if there is any blood or obvious damage in these areas.
    • Ask the injured person to cough on a semi-regular basis to stop fluid build up in the lungs. This may be painful, but could save their life in the long run. If the person can sit, then get them to do this, as this will help to bring up any fluid.
    • Cover the person with blankets or extra clothing, make sure to keep their hands and feet warm, and provide hot drinks if possible. This will keep the person’s body temperature up, even if they go into shock. Try to keep any heat such as hot water bottles towards the core of the body (chest, stomach, head) as this will keep all of their internal organs warm and working properly.
    • Get the person to the hospital as quickly as possible. Call the emergency services, or try to get the person to the hospital under your own speed if this is going to be quicker. Whatever you are doing to help prevent pneumonia, the hospital will be able to do this much more effectively.
