    Accidents in the oil industry

    Whilst the oil and chemicals industry is potentially one of the most hazardous to work in, especially when we consider offshore oil rigs, it has a fairly good health and safety record. Accidents, when they happen, are tragic. The Hazardous Industry Directorate (HID) regulates the industry and attempts to ensure the safety of workers and the general public.

    Although management at oil refineries carry out risk assessments and have to abide by the rules of the industry regulators, the HID who operate in tandem with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). They attempt, as far as possible, to ascertain that management teams at oil refineries do everything they can to minimise the risk of accidents occurring.
