Originally to be named King William the Fourth’s Square, Trafalgar Square was eventually named to commemorate the British Naval victory at the battle of Trafalgar.
At its centre stands Nelsons Column, which was a design found from holding a competition. The work started in 1840 and took three years to complete, the statue being raised onto it in 1843. The four lions around the base were an addition in 1867. There are several other statues and busts around the square, but none are as well known as the statue of Nelson.
Trafalgar Square is famous worldwide, tourists from everywhere making a beeline for it when they visit London.
