When to be Most Vigilant on a Bike

If you are regularly cycling then you should be aware that there are some times that it is safer and other times when it is less safe to be on your bike, and how you can avoid accidents during these less safe times.  As a cyclist you are more at risk of being very seriously injured if you are involved in an accident on the road, as there is nothing to protect you from the road or other vehicles.  Here are some tips on ensuring that you don’t get into any accidents in the first place, and thus avoid being badly injured.

    During Bad Weather

Bad weather is more dangerous to any vehicle than good weather.  Bad weather conditions make the road surface slippery and more likely to cause accidents.  Ice can make it difficult to stop when driving at any kind of speed, and wind and rain can lessen visibility as well as making the surface of the road more dangerous.  If you must go out in bad weather, avoid roads which you know will prove a hazard.  Make sure that you are wearing a helmet and protective clothing, and preferably something bright or fluorescent which will make you more visible to other drivers.

    During Rush Hour

The busier the road, the more dangerous it is for anyone cycling.  A bicycle takes up so little of the road it can be too easy for other drivers to get in the way or miss the cyclist when they are making decisions, making these busy times a dangerous time to be on a bike. When the roads are very busy it is best to avoid main roads, and any large intersections where cars can be coming from all directions.  Take your bike into the middle of lanes where you are very visible to all other road users, and avoid getting boxed in by any large vehicle which could shield you from view.

    With Other Drivers

Cyclists are known for bearing the brunt of other drivers’ anger from time to time.  Car users tend to be irritated by cyclists as they see them as being in the way, and moving too slowly.  Try to keep yourself out of the way of cars so that they can get around you when they need to, and don’t take up the centre of an empty lane moving at 5 miles an hour, or you may find yourself a target for road rage.
