Ockley is a rural village located in the south east of England within the Surrey county region. It sits in the shadow of Leith Hill, which is the highest point in south east England.

The origin of the name Ockley comes from the term “Occa’s lea”.  Occa was a landowner from Saxon times who owned a vast stretch of land that covered the majority of modern day Ockley. The word “lea” meant clearing in the wood so Ockley was “Occa’s clearing in the wood”.

    Battle of Ockley

It was in this period in the Saxon times that a major battle took place in Ockley that is still remembered today. In 851 AD, an invading Danish army that included 350 ships fought the West-Saxon army who were led by King Ethelwulf. The Danish army had already plundered London and Canterbury and was travelling west to take the city of Winchester. However, the Danish army suffered a heavy defeat to the West-Saxon army in Ockley and is considered one the Danish army’s worst defeats in its history.

    Ockley Windmill

If you find yourself in Ockley, be sure to visit the Ockley (or Elmer’s) windmill that was built in 1803 and is located in the south east of Ockley.  The windmill stood for 150 years before collapsing in 1944. Starting in 2007, the Ockley windmill has been in the process of being rebuilt by local historical enthusiasts. It is still in the process of being rebuilt but even in its unfinished state is an impressive landmark that stands several storeys high.
