Lochearnhead is a village at the foot of Glen Ogle in Scotland. In June 1865, melancholia hit the village as it was overtaken by something beyond its control. It all started when Sergeant Peter Irvine of the county of Perthshire Constabulary and stationed at Lochearnhead was going about his duty.

Sergeant Irvine discovered a vagrant sleeping in a shed and had removed him to a lodging house. Unknown to Irvine, the poor man was suffering from typhus fever. Irvine caught the disease and had to take to his bed. Prior to this taking place, Mrs Irvine has given birth to twins six weeks previously. Suffice to say, looking after new born twins and a sick husband wore her out and she too got the disease.

    He was being murdered

Sergeant Irvine had an older son living with him from an earlier marriage. Irvine junior was sleeping in the kitchen as the bedroom was overcrowded. At two o ‘clock in the morning, he heard his father crying out that he was being murdered. When Irvine junior ran upstairs to investigate, he discovered his step mother with a coal shovel in her hand and in a great state of excitement. His father was lying in bed with a deep cut on the back of his head which had been made by the shovel. There was also a slight cut on his throat. When Mrs Irvine saw the boy, she ran upstairs to a garret but immediately ran back down again and then left the house for the highway.

Doctors were called and Mr Irvine’s wounds were attended to. They were not considered serious although the typhus was. Mrs Irvine was found and both the couple were admitted to hospital in a critical state. The dreadful situation arose simply because a man was doing his duty at work.
