    Accidents in the oil industry

While the oil and chemicals industry is potentially one of the most hazardous to work in, especially when we consider offshore oil rigs, it has a fairly good health and safety record. Accidents when they happen, however, are tragic. The Hazardous Industry Directorate (HID) regulates the industry and attempts to ensure the safety of workers and the general public.

One of the more recent tragedies at an oil refinery took place at the Chevron oil refinery at Pembroke Dock in Wales in 2011. Four people died while carrying out maintenance work. It took ten fire engines to put out the blaze after the explosion occurred.

Also in 2011 there was an explosion at the Dalian oil refinery in North West China, and there have been more recent accidents in oil refineries in Venezuela and the USA.

Although management at oil refineries carry out risk assessments and have to abide by the rules of the industry regulators, the HID who operate in tandem with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). They attempt, as far as possible, to ascertain that management teams at oil refineries do everything they can to minimize the risk of accidents occurring.
