When people think of compensation claims for workplace injuries, they often think of worse case scenarios, like the ones we all read about in the papers or on the internet. We also associate workplace injuries with certain types of industries, such as construction or farming.
But did you know, that the ordinary office can harbour a whole host of dangers?
Many injury lawyer Bishop’s Stortford will tell you that repetitive strain injuries (RSI) are becoming increasing topics for compensation claims.
Your employer MUST by law, ensure your health and safety and work; your workplace must be safe to use and work practices too.
A little known RSI type injury is bursitis.
What is bursitis?
This is a condition that will need diagnosis from your GP, and may include several visits to consultants and other specialists.
A bursa is small fluid filled sac that is found around joints that are lubricated by synovial fluid. The knee is one such joint, as well as the shoulder, knee and elbow.
Bursitis is inflammation of this small sac; it can be painful and it can be avoided in some cases. Bursitis can result from repetitive or over-use of a joint such as:
- The shoulder being injured as a result of repetitive overhead lifting and reaching such as in a warehouse situation
- The elbow can be affected by constant bending and straightening of the arm such as pulling and pushing levers
- The knee can also be affected with constant bending such as repeated kneeling; this was more commonly known as ‘housemaid’s knee’ which many women suffered from during their many years as domestic servants
- The ankle can become inflamed when there us a lot of walking involved BUT you were not supplied with the correct footwear
Have you taken an impact at work?
Many injury lawyer Bishop’s Stortford will also tell you that many of their clients claiming compensation also took a heavy physical impact at work, which can damage the bursa causing inflammation in the future. This could be a fall from a step ladder or as a result of being hit by a hard, heavy object.
