Make your carpal tunnel syndrome claim using an injury claims lawyer in Lawrenny

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful condition which affects the fingers, hands and wrist. It is caused by compression of the median nerve in the wrist which controls sensation and movement of the hands.

However, it is unclear what causes this compression to occur. The carpal tunnel is a narrow passage of eight small bones and tough bands of tissue in the wrist.  This acts like a pulley for the tendons which bend the fingers.

    Risk factors

Whilst it is uncertain what causes the median nerve to become compressed, certain risk factors have been identified which may make you more predisposed to developing carpal tunnel syndrome:

    • a family history of carpal tunnel syndrome
    • pregnancy it usually disappears after the birth
    • wrist injuries
    • diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis
    • repetitive and strenuous work with the hands over a long period of time

    Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome

The symptoms may begin gradually and can be worse at night initially.  These include:

    1. pain in the wrist and fingers
    2. numbness in the hand and fingers
    3. tingling sensation like pins and needles in the fingers and hand
    4. a dull aching in the hand or arm
    5. all fingers may be affected as well as the thumb
    6. some sufferers have dry skin in the affected area

    Treatment

The treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome depends on the severity of the symptoms and how they may be affecting daily life.  For minor symptoms, self help treatment may be all that is needed; taking painkillers, resting the affected hand and using a support bandage.

For more moderate cases, the GP may suggest a corticosteroid injection to relieve the discomfort or the use of wrist splints.  In more severe cases, surgery may be required to relieve the pressure on the median nerve.
