Unscrupulous company responsible for fall from height fatality plus illegal use of asbestos

Working at height still remains one of the most dangerous occupations. The risks can be largely offset by making sure the right safety measures are put in place. But some employers can be quite unscrupulous, like one particular company in Newport, Shropshire. This company not only exposed an employee to what turned out to be a fatal fall from height accident, but it also exposed the worker and anyone else coming into contact with the roofing material, to the dangers of asbestos.

Fraudulent and illegal use of second-hand material containing asbestos

The company responsible for this incident decided to use second-hand roofing sheets which contained white asbestos to re-roof a barn in Frankly, Worcestershire. The incident was caused through greed. The company involved had quoted £4,000 to the owner of the barn for using new roofing material. By using second-hand material containing the asbestos, they stood to gain over £3,750 worth of profit from the job.

56-year-old worker fell 6 metres to his death

The 56-year-old worker who had been instructed to carry out the work fell 6 metres to his death when the fragile asbestos sheeting collapsed under his weight. The director of the company who employed the 56-year-old tried to have things hushed up by intimating that everyone would be implicated if the truth came out about the use of product containing the asbestos.

    Director responsible sent to prison

The director of the company who perpetrated the fraud and contravened the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, and who was responsible for the death of the 56-year-old, was sentenced to 12 months in prison. He was also told he could not become a director again for another six years, and was instructed to pay £10,000 in costs.
