    Injury claim in Richmond

    Do you need to make an injury claim in Richmond for your whiplash?

    If you have been the blameless victim of an accident that has caused you whiplash, you may need to make an injury claim in Richmond. Whiplash is an injury that is often sneered at, but in reality can be extremely painful and disabling. It is caused through a sudden jolt to the head that throws it backwards, forwards or sideways. This damages the tendons and ligaments in the neck area, which creates the pain and other symptoms.

    How whiplash could happen

    The most common cause of whiplash is a rear-end shunt in a car. You could also sustain the injury by:

    • Playing contact sports such as rugby or boxing;
    • Being hit on the head by a heavy object; or
    • Falling over and banging your head.

    If you sustain whiplash in one of these situations, or in any other way, and the cause was not your fault, you may be able to make an injury claim in Richmond.

    The symptoms of a sprain in your neck

    Whiplash in any other part of the body would be called a sprain, but because of where it is it is more of a problem. The symptoms you may experience include:

    • Pain in the neck area;
    • Stiffness and lack of movement in the neck area;
    • Backache;
    • Headaches;
    • Pins and needles or numbness in the arms and legs;
    • Muscle spasms;
    • Blurred vision;
    • Dizziness;
    • Nausea;
    • Lethargy; and
    • Depression.

    Mild whiplash will start to heal after a few days and should be totally better after a few weeks. Severe whiplash can last a very long time and some victims never totally recover.

    Treating your whiplash

    The first thing to do is put icepacks on the area to reduce the pain and swelling, but never put ice directly onto your skin — wrap it in something first. Your neck will initially need rest to give it time to recover, but as soon as the healing process starts a little gentle exercise is good for mobility. Sometimes, in severe cases, a neck brace or physiotherapy will be used to try to relieve the symptoms.
