    Injury claim in Priddy

    Suffered carpal tunnel syndrome and unsure if you can make an injury claim Priddy?

    The carpal tunnel, located in the wrist, is a narrow passage made up of eight small bones, called the carpal bones, and a tough band of fibrous tissue. These tendons allow the fingers to bend. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve in the tunnel becomes compressed. This nerve controls sensation and movement in the hands.

    Although carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition which can affect anyone, it’s reported to become more common with age and affects more women than men.

    Symptoms of carpel tunnel syndrome

    Symptoms can develop gradually over a period of time and may include:

    • Pain in the thumb, index, ring or middle finger that is worse during the night;
    • Pins and needles in the fingers;
    • Numbness in the fingers and hand;
    • Tingling sensation in the fingers and hand;
    • Weakness in the thumb; and
    • Dull ache in hand or arm.

    Causes of carpal tunnel syndrome

    It’s not known what causes the median nerve to become compressed, but certain risk factors have been identified. These include:

    • Injuries to the wrist caused by an accident;
    • Pregnancy;
    • Family history of carpal tunnel syndrome;
    • Strenuous and repetitive work with the hand;
    • Constant use of vibrating tools; and
    • Diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis.

    Treatment

    Carpal tunnel syndrome may gradually improve over time without treatment. However, in mild cases you may wish to try some self-help treatments such as a wrist splint to support the wrist. In moderate cases a GP may decide to give a course of steroid injections, which may improve the condition. However, in severe cases surgery may be necessary in order to reduce the pressure on the median nerve. This may require a period of convalescence and time off work in order to recover fully.
