Common Problems After an Injury
Although there are the obvious physical ramifications of being involved in an accident or sustaining a serious injury, there are lots of other questions and problems which can make an appearance as well. Many people, especially those who have not been through anything similar before, will not understand what is happening and this can be stressful. Here are some of the most common problems and questions with answers!
I Feel So Down
Feeling depressed or angry is common after a serious injury. As your body is trying to heal itself, it can have all sorts of strange physical and mental consequences, one of which is depression. This depression is transitory and will only last for as long as you are healing. Sometimes depression can be caused by you not being able to do the same things that you could before your accident, and this can be remedied by slowly trying to get back to your old routine. If your depression persists, speak to a counsellor for more advice.
I’ve Lost My Appetite
This is common after surgery or serious injury. Your body suppresses appetite as part of its fight or flight response. After a serious injury or surgery, as your body is healing your fight or flight kicks in and your appetite may disappear, along with a number of other things (such as your ability to go to the toilet!). This is normal and will subside after a little while, but you can help yourself by eating exactly what you want to when you want to, and trying to get your five a day, even if just through smoothies and juice.
I’m in Pain
Everyone expects to be in a little pain or discomfort after surgery, but sometimes can be shocked by how much pain they are feeling. Unless your doctor thinks that there is a problem, take this to be normal and medicate yourself with painkillers and lots of rest. If you do feel that the pain is getting worse rather than better, or you are worried that something has gone wrong, your doctor will not blame you for going to them for help.
I Can’t Afford to Live
If you have had a serious accident or injury, you will be unlikely to be able to go back to work right away. This can have serious consequences for your financial situation, so you should do what you can to get the money that is owed to you. If you are unable to work, you can claim Employment and Support Allowance, which should give you enough for food and to pay your bills each month. You may also make an injury claim in Portree.
