Man and machines in the workplace

Man and machines have a chequered history. In terms of the workplace, machines, and particularly unguarded machines which have exposed moving parts, are responsible for a significant number of injuries. Take for example the injury suffered by a 48 year-old worker, while working with a food casing machine in Dronfield.

Operator tried to clear jam while machine still running

The mechanism of the machine being operated by the 48-year-old, became jammed. The operator tried to ascertain what the problem was by feeling around the machinery with his fingers. Unfortunately the machine was still running and when his fingers came into contact with an unguarded clipper, his index finger was severed at the top joint, and he also lost the tip of his right thumb.

The 48-year-old man required plastic surgery to repair the damage. He was unable to drive for three months, and had to remain off work for the best part of a year.

History of problems with ineffective machine guards

When the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) conducted an investigation into the incident, they found that similar incidents have happened previously. These earlier incidents resulted in the machinery being fitted with guards. Unfortunately, these guards only supplied partial protection from the moving components. Following the latest incident, the guards have now been modified to provide more comprehensive protection.

The company that employed the 48-year-old were found to be in breach of section 11(1) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998. They were fined the sum of £13,000, and instructed to pay costs amounting to a further £7,353

    Lesson now learnt?

During the hearing, Stuart Parry, and HSE inspector said: “It’s seems remarkable that in spite of previous similar incidents taking place, and risk assessments being carried out, that the company in question had not installed better guarding on their machines.”
