Her early life
She was born in June 1940 as Esther Louise Rantzen and has one younger sister, Pricilla. The family lived in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire and she was educated at North London Collegiate School followed by Somerville College, Oxford. She performed with the Oxford University Dramatic Society and joined the Oxford Theatre Group, performing in Oxford and Edinburgh.
Her TV career
After training as a secretary, Esther was recruited by the BBC Radio as a trainee studio manager. Her TV career started in the programme planning department before she moved on to be a researcher on various current affairs programmes. In 1968 she became one of the presenters of the Bernard Braden consumer show, Bradens Week which she stayed with until Braden returned to his native Canada to present a similar show. In 1973, the BBC started That’s Life with Esther as the main presenter. It ran for 21 years and is probably the show she is best remembered for, being one of the most popular shows ever on UK television.
As part of the show, Esther ran several campaigns about things she considered to be unjust for consumers, and won many of the fights she took on. Some of these, such as seatbelts in the back of cars, created a change in the law. She had become so influential that not just the public listened to her, but authority as well. She went on to present many more TV shows, most of them her own ideas with her own formats.Open Claim Calculator
Her charitable work
Esther is the patron or vice president of at least 15 charities and takes her work with these very seriously. She started Childline in 1986, the first helpline for children of its kind in the world. Now 150 other countries have copied this so many children around the world are a lot safer because of Esther. She even trained as a counsellor to enable her to be a voluntary worker on the helpline.
