Kinross, a former market town near the centre of Scotland, is home to an amateur football team who currently play in the Fife Kingdom Caledonian Football League. It is also the place that Flight Sergeant George Thompson once called home. Thompson was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross in 1945, and it is often cited as the best merited of the entire air war. He was the wireless operator in a Lancaster of No. 9 Squadron on a dawn raid against the Dortmund-Ems Canal, when the plane was struck by a salvo of two 88 mm shells.
Among other things, musical festivals are held nearby at the decommissioned Balado airfield, which was also the home a NATO ICBM (Intercontinental Ballistic Missile) early warning radar station. During the Second World War, you could find an airstrip and barracks here. Of course, today there are much more peaceful things going on in and around Kinross (usually, anyway).
