Like all the western isles of Scotland, the Isle of Arran benefits from the warm waters of the Gulf Stream that flow northwards from the Gulf of Mexico. Water expands when it heats, and the insolation (heat from the sun) warms the sea in the gulf and it pushes northwards, displacing the colder water as it moves up, which in turn, gets pushed southwards to the gulf where it is warmed again, and so the circular flow is created. Without the benefit of the Gulf Stream, Britain would be a lot colder than it is now, and would have much colder winters, like those in New York.
