For anyone wishing to launch an injury claim in Stockton-on-Tees, having sustained an injury in the workplace because of unsafe machinery, Accident Advice Helpline’s website can be a great source of help.
Machines with rollers are notorious hazards
Machines that have automated rollers can be a hazard unless effective guards are put in place to prevent people from touching them. If an exposed roller has anything protruding from it, like a screw-head for example, this can pose another hazard if anyone approaches wearing loose clothing. That’s exactly what happened at an engineering company in Radcliffe.
Alert work colleague saves the day
A 58-year-old worker caught the sleeve cuff of his overalls on a protruding screw standing proud of a 3 metre long rotating cylinder. The power of the cylinder caught him, twisting him around in the process. Luckily a quick thinking colleague was around. He pushed the emergency stop button, and then cut the injury victim’s overalls in order to stop him becoming more entangled in the roller, before its motion ground to a halt.
The 58-year-old suffered injuries to both his back and his knees, and he also had to have 12 stitches in his arm. It took him 7 weeks to recover before he was able to return to work.
The engineering company pleaded guilty in respect of breaching the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998. They were fined a total of £3,000 and instructed to pay costs of a further £3,767.
Unsafe machinery and unsuitable clothing
The accident was a combination of unsafe machinery and unsuitable clothing. Had the injury victim’s colleague not acted so quickly, the injuries sustained could have been far worse.
Since the accident, all protruding screws have been removed from the rollers, and factory issued clothing has been changed to include things like elasticised cuffs.
