The disadvantage youth and inexperience
Young people can be more vulnerable than older workers due to their lack of workplace experience. Sometimes, of course accidents happen that could involve any sort of worker, be he/she an apprentice or a seasoned factory worker, a qualified engineer, or an office worker. Take the case of a young 18-year-old apprentice who had an accident at a textiles company in Langley.
Worker pulled into rollers of textile machine
The young apprentice was winding some died silk onto a roller to enable it to be removed from the machine he was working on when he spotted a crease in the material. He went to smooth the crease but his fingers became caught and he was pulled into the machines roller up to his armpits. It was necessary to cut him free.
The 18-year-old suffered extensive injuries to his arm, including fractures and nerve damage. To this day he only has limited use of his left hand.
No emergency stop brake in place
When the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) investigated, they found there was no system in place that could cut the power off or slow the speed of the rollers in the case of an emergency.
At the subsequent court case, the textiles company entered a guilty plea in terms of breaching the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. They were fined £24,000 and instructed to pay prosecution costs of £4,466.86
The accident could have happened to anyone of any age
In this particular instance, the fact that the injury victim was a young apprentice was neither here nor there. This accident could have happened to anyone of any age and experience.
Since the incident, the company has installed an emergency stop device operated by pull cord, and a “hold to run” button, which when released, automatically stops the machine.
