34-year-old worker falls from top of gritting vehicle
A 34 year old man suffered a fall from height accident when he fell from the top of a road-gritter in Kilsyth The incident happened when the 34-year-old returned to the yard having completed a routine gritting job in nearby Blackford. He went to help three colleagues who were clearing gritting salt from the spreader of another gritting vehicle. He ascended a ladder at the rear of the gritter in order to get on top. As he walked along the top towards the spreader, he slipped and fell 3 metres headlong onto the concrete yard surface.
Spinal injuries leave the accident victim paralysed
The injury victim was rushed to hospital where he was found to have suffered several spinal fractures which left him paralysed. Since the incident, a subsequent operation has given him back partial use of his right arm.
No fall prevention equipment issued
Although the gritting vehicle had been fitted with a ladder to access the top of the vehicle, once up there, there was no platform or handrail to prevent a fall. The company involved did not issue any other fall prevention safety equipment, such as a fall arrest harnesses.
No safe methodology in place for working at height
A subsequent investigation carried out by the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) found that the company who operated the gritting machines did not have any work methodologies in place for working at height. It was found that they had contravened Regulation 6(3) of the Work at Height Regulations 2005, and they were fined a total of £13,500.
