Worker receives crush injuries from overhead crane in car manufacturing plant
A nasty crush injury was sustained by a worker employed in a car body manufacturing plant in Luton. The worker was using an overhead crane to move an 8 tonne die block used in the manufacture of van parts, to its temporary storage location. He was in the process of removing the crane’s lifting chains from the die block when the 50 tonne crane began moving. It pinned him to another die block already in storage behind, causing severe crush injuries.
Injury victim undergoes numerous operations in hospital
The injuries that the worker sustained included fractures to his ribs, (which also caused his lungs to collapse), a broken upper left arm, a fractured breastbone, and broken right collar-bone. The injury victim was in hospital for two weeks and underwent numerous operations. Since leaving the hospital he has returned on many other occasions for additional surgery. He has not yet been able to return to work.
Important safety feature missing
The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) discovered that a protective frame that should have been fitted over the control levers of the crane was missing. The purpose of the frame was to ensure that the crane could not be inadvertently moved. The investigation also uncovered several other shortcomings with regard to the maintenance procedures of 10 cranes in the workshop.
Car manufacturer fined
The company was fined a total of £155,000 and instructed to pay costs of a further £2,795 with regard to breaches of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, and the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998.
