The importance of storing goods safely

Storing goods correctly and safely in the workplace is important, as a 50-year-old worker employed in a Basildon joinery company found to his detriment. He was not responsible for inadequately storing the material in question, but he did unfortunately suffer the consequences.

The 50-year-old had been tasked with cutting a number of MDF boards down to size. The boards were stored vertically, leaning against racking. The injury victim had pulled out 3 boards, but as he was pulling out the 4th, 15 of the boards, (each weighing 30 kg) fell on top of him. He suffered 2 collapsed lungs, a fractured collarbone, and 5 fractured ribs, plus gashing his head. He was hospitalised for two weeks.

The ensuing investigation carried out by the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) found that the board’s had not been correctly racked and had been lent in an unsecure position.

    Joinery companies should know better

In a statement released after the hearing, the HSE concluded that the risks from falling timber and MDF type material are well documented. In recent years there have been a number of accidents that have caused severe and sometimes fatal injuries. Specialist joinery companies should know better.

The joinery company responsible entered a plea of guilty in terms of a single breach of the Work at Height Regulations 2005. They were fined the sum of £10,000 and instructed to pay a further £598 in costs.
