Don’t put yourself at risk of injury by employing a gas fitter, who is not Gas Safe registered. Gas leaks that lead to explosions, or poorly fitted or maintained gas appliances that emit carbon monoxide, can result in serious injuries or fatalities. If you live in Sefton and you’ve suffered a significant injury relating to a domestic gas incident, why not employ the services of Accident Advice Helpline to launch your injury claim in Sefton remotely over the Internet?
Bogus Gas Safe registered contractor
A couple who lived in Somerset were lucky not to have been injured following illegal and unsafe gas work being carried out at their premises. The contractor they employed to install a central heating system purported to be Gas Safe registered. However, he was not, despite the fact that his letterhead and the test certificates he left the occupants displayed the Gas Safe logo. The bogus contractor had copied a genuine Gas Safe registered ID from a real registered engineer, without his knowledge.
A catalogue of life threatening hazards
When a Gas Safe Register regional Investigations Officer visited the household in October 2013, he identified nine defects in the installation, three of which posed a danger to both the property itself, and the lives of the property holders.
Some of the faults identified included: the chimney flue not having been correctly sealed; the telescopic chimney flue not having being properly extended or sealed; and the flue not having been installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Contractor fined for breaching Gas Safe health and safety regulations
At the subsequent investigation carried out by the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) it was discovered that the contractor was once Gas Safe registered but that his qualification had lapsed in 2010. Standards do change in terms of gas installations and this contractor left his clients at serious risk. Upon pleading guilty to a number of breaches of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, the contractor in question was fined £2,100 plus costs of another £2,000.
