Fall from height accidents cause serious injury

Falling from height is a major cause of severe and sometimes fatal injury. Far too many easily preventable fall from height accidents happen each and every year, purely and simply because the work has not been properly risk assessed in advance. Take the case of a 23-year-old roofing worker who fell and suffered serious injuries in Hoddeson as an example.

    23 year-old roofing worker fell 4 metres

The 23 year-old was working as part of a team carrying out repairs on a fragile asbestos cement roof. The roof gave way underneath him. He fell 4 metres, sustaining some severe injuries. His injuries included a fractured skull and eye-socket, a fractured wrist, contusions to his back, a badly gashed leg, and cuts to his head that needed stitching. He was in hospital for five days.

    HSE discover safety failings

When the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) conducted an investigation, it was found that the employers of the 23-year-old had not planned or risk assessed the job, and had not provided any safety equipment such as a fall-arrest harness.

The team of workers had placed scaffold boards in position on the fragile roof and overlaid them with batons, anchoring down tarpaulin. The injury victim actually fell through an unprotected section of the roof when he was building the final stages of the framework. Had a proper risk assessment been carried out, appropriate equipment would have been specified, which could have prevented the accident.
