According to a recent article published by the BBC, 6740 people needed hospital treatment for dog bites in 2013 and that does not include the dog bites that were more minor. 21 people, including 13 children have died in the UK because of dog attacks since 2005, and the government have introduced tougher laws to give police more powers, not just to prosecute the dog owners, but to try and prevent the attacks happening in the first place.
Many victims of dog attacks can claim compensation, as long as you did not provoke the dog in any way, you may be able to make a personal injury claim in Ealing against the owner.
The new powers to prevent dog attacks and a personal injury claim in Ealing
As part of the new powers, local authorities will be able to demand that owners take their dogs for training, they may have to muzzle the dog and microchips are another option.
Because the government feels that many dog attacks are caused by negligent owners, they have also introduced prison sentences for the owners of violent dogs, such as:
- 14 years for a fatal dog attack
- 5 years for an attack that causes injury
They have also changed the law regarding attacks on private property, which under old laws they could not prosecute for. Now, no matter what reason the victim is on the premises, the owner can be prosecuted, and being on their own property is no immunity.
One of the instigators of the changes said “Dog attacks are devastating for victims and their families which is why we are taking tough action against those that allow it to happen. Police and local authorities will now have more powers to demand that irresponsible dog owners take steps to prevent attacks before they occur.”
Every day in the UK, 9 postmen or postwomen are attacked by dogs, so these new measures are not before time.
