Some Hyndburn road traffic accidents that cause injury happen as a result of rain. If it rains for the first time after a long, dry spell; when the rain hits the road surface, it picks up all of the dirt, oil, and grease that has accumulated, and can make the road surface surprisingly slippery.
The importance of good quality tyres
Slippery road surfaces don’t in themselves cause accidents; not until you have to brake hard, or swerve that is. That can be when the trouble starts. If all vehicles are fitted with good quality tyres, which have plenty of tread, they provide much better traction in terms of clinging to the road surface, and siphon any excess water away through the tread.
Don’t let tyres wear too low
Unfortunately many people drive on cheap, low quality tyres, and tyres where the tread has worn past the legal limit. Many good quality tyres have a coloured stripe built into them which shows through when the tyre is worn. Even so, many drivers ignore this warning which is when accidents can happen.
Keeping a clear windscreen
It’s not just tyres that are important in terms of rain; your windscreen wipers and your demisters are important too. If your wiper blades are worn, they won’t clear the rain very efficiently, and they may cause smearing. Also, when it rains it often causes your windscreen to mist up. The only way to clear this is with your demisters; so you must make sure they’re working as well.
Use anti-smear windscreen wash
One more thing is to make sure your windscreen wash reservoir is topped up, and that it contains a good quality anti smear solution. Remember what we said earlier about when it rains after a long dry spell? All of the dirt and grease that’s on the road will get thrown up by other vehicles and will end up on your windscreen. If your windscreen washers aren’t working and are not topped up with anti smear fluid, you will be in trouble. Your wipers will simply smear the grime across your windscreen blocking your vision.Open Claim Calculator
