    If you have broken a bone, the area around it will be painful, bruised and swollen. The first thing you must do is go to your local Accident and Emergency department. There, your bone will be X-rayed and placed into a cast or other support if appropriate. Perhaps you may require pain relief and antibiotics. Depending on the particular features of your fracture, you may require regular reviews in a fracture clinic.

    Sometimes a broken bone will need surgery

    Whether or not you will need surgery depends on many factors including your age, location of the fracture, displacement of the broken bones and whether previous attempts at realignments were successful. In addition, if you have a condition like osteoporosis which affects the condition of your bones, this may well have an influence on the extent of the fracture and how best to treat it.

    Following removal of any cast or following surgery, you may require support from a physiotherapist or occupational therapist to help you regain as much function as possible. However, recovery time may be long and it could be complicated by medical problems, including infection and incomplete fusion of the broken bones. All this time, your life will be negatively affected.
