    What is HAVS and how do you get it?

    HAVS, or hand arm vibration syndrome, is a condition affecting the hands which is brought on by using vibrating hand held machinery over a number of years. The people who are most likely to develop HAVS are those who frequently use tools such as:

    • Hammer drills;
    • Concrete breakers or pokers;
    • Chipping hammers;
    • Grinders, disc cutters or sanders; and
    • Hedge trimmers, chain saws or mowers.

    What are the symptoms of HAVS?

    HAVS can cause symptoms and pain ranging from mild to severe. It affects the arms, hands and fingers. The most commonly recognised symptom is vibration white finger, where the fingers lose colour due to damage to the blood supply in the hand.

    The impact of these symptoms differ depending on the individual victim, but common problems include:

    • Severe pain and discomfort in the fingers and hands, especially when they come into contact with anything cold;
    • Inability to use fine motor control with the fingers, making the victim unable to hold pens, screws or handle small objects; and
    • Loss of grip in the hand, making the victim unable to use manual tools, hold ladders or open containers.

    What do HAVS compensation claims cover?

    HAVS compensation claims try to offer financial recompense for the impact of the condition on the victim’s life, particularly if their condition could have been prevented by proper implementation of health and safety procedures, for example in their workplace.

    Someone suffering from HAVS may have to change their job, because working in their trade may no longer be an option. This might leave them with lost wages and damaged employment prospects. They may need medical treatment and their quality of life may be seriously limited by pain and inability to take part in activities that they have previously enjoyed. HAVS compensation claims try to calculate the impact of all of this and turn it into a financial sum that will go some way to helping the sufferer to make adjustments to their life and deal with their condition.
