Hand sprain – the causes and symptoms

Have you suffered a hand sprain?  Was your sprain caused by someone else? Wondering if you need to make a compensation claim?  This article will talk about the causes and symptoms of hand sprain and how to claim compensation if you need to.

    Causes of hand sprain

A hand sprain is where a ligament, tendon or muscle in your hand is stretched further than it is designed to.  If a tendon is stretched too far, it can tear.  These kind of hand sprains are most commonly caused by a sudden impact, such as using your hand to break a fall or some other kind of collision involving your hand.  The other common cause of hand sprain is through sports such as netball, hockey or basketball, again often involving a collision, either with the ball or another player.

    Symptoms of hand sprain

Common symptoms of hand sprain include swelling, bruising and restricted movement, accompanied by severe pain.  If you suspect you may have torn a ligament, rather than just bruised your hand, you should speak to your doctor.  Tendons, ligaments and muscles are able to heal themselves, but in the case of a serious tear to a ligament or tendon, surgery may be required.

    Treatment of hand sprain

It is reasonably unusual to treat hand sprain with surgery.  Most cases are treated by restricting and supporting the hand, by using an elasticated compression bandage and a sling.  Your doctor may also recommend that you use ice for the swelling and exercises.  When any muscle has a period of inactivity, it becomes less flexible, so it is important to complete any exercise routine your doctor recommends.
