Greater Manchester Accident Claim

Greater Manchester is a metropolitan county surrounding the city of Manchester in the north western part of the United Kingdom. The county covers approximately 493 square miles (1,277 square kilometres) which accounts for the large majority of the Manchester urban area.

The county shares borders with Cheshire (to the south-west and south), Derbyshire (to the south-east), West Yorkshire (to the north-east), Lancashire (to the north) and Merseyside (to the west). Being such a large area, the metropolitan county actually consists of ten metropolitan boroughs: Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, Wigan and the cities of Manchester and Salford.

The Administrative History Of Greater Manchester

Greater Manchester, as a metropolitan county, was officially formed on the 1st April 1974 as a result of the raft of local governmental changes brought into action by the passage of the 1972 Local Government Act. The new administrative entity was created from a number of former areas but was administered to in two ways for around 12 years after its inception.

These two parts are explained by the fact that some mechanisms and issues were dealt with by the twelve district councils of the area whilst others were administered by the Greater Manchester County Council. In 1986, however, the county council was nominally abolished essentially making the districts unitary authority areas.

The Population Of Greater Manchester

As has been mentioned above, the county of Greater Manchester essentially covers the entirety of the Manchester urban area, which is actually the second most populous conurbation within the whole of the UK. It is this, therefore, which explains how Greater Manchester comes to have a huge population of approximately 2.7 million permanent residents.

This very lofty population figure has a number of effects on the area but the one which we will focus on is the fact that it increases the accident and injury rate of the county. We are interested in this as it is also what explains how come Greater Manchester accident claim proceedings are also relatively common.
