What if I get a finger injury in the UK?
A finger injury in the UK can be quite difficult to know if the finger is broken, dislocated or just sprained. The symptoms for all three are the same
How to tell what type of finger injury you have
If your finger looks deformed, or if part of it is pointing in a different direction, you have probably broken or dislocated one of the bones in your finger, and it will need an x-ray to confirm which it is. If your finger injury is a sprain, it means you have stretched the ligaments, the finger should not look deformed or bruised and the swelling and pain will eventually subside on their own.
How a finger injury in the UK may happen
There are lots of ways you can break, dislocate or sprain your fingers, but the most common is sudden impact, maybe from a punch or a fall.
How to fix a finger injury in the UK
This will depend on how bad the break or dislocation is, but generally the treatments are:
- Strapping the damaged finger to the one next to it (this is known as buddy taping)
- Fixing the finger in a splint
- Fixing the finger in a plaster cast
- In severe cases, surgery to insert wires, plates or screws to hold the bones together.
