    Symptoms of a broken leg

If you have been involved in a fall or an accident, you may have suffered various broken bones. From a slip or trip, a broken leg is common.

If, after an accident, your leg is painful, it may be a break, or less serious sprain or twist. Here’s how you can tell if it is a break.

    • You may be able to see the bone poking out through broken skin or a wound
    • The pain may be severe. Sometimes though, you can’t feel so much pain, as the shock of the wound causes natural painkillers to come into play.
    • You may feel sick and dizzy from the shock
    • You will not be able to bear weight on that leg
    • There may be swelling in the area.

If you suspect a broken leg, it’s important to get to an accident and emergency hospital straight away. They can tell from an x-ray if it is a break, and will set it in plaster. If it is not a break they will be able to bandage the leg and give you appropriate care and advice.

If your accident is very obviously not a break, for example, if you can fairly easily walk on the leg, you may have twisted your ankle. You need to rest it and bandage it securely. Remember RICE: Rest, Ice, Elevation, Compression.

What to Do with a Twisted Ankle

So take your injured ankle home, lie down on the sofa, bandage it with an elastic bandage (not too tightly!) prop it up on some cushions, and add some ice cubes in a plastic bag or frozen peas. If someone is ready with a cup of tea for you that’s perfect. Try not to walk on it too much and in a few days it will be fine. You can take some paracetamol or aspirin for the pain.

If your accident is serious and you think it is someone else’s fault, for example a broken leg following a trip over some broken paving stones, call our Falkirk ‘no win, no fee*’ solicitors.
