The Rainhill Trials was a competition that was held in October 1829 in order for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway company to decide what type of engine would pull their trains. They were unsure whether to select stationary steam engines or locomotives for the job and felt that a competition would be the best way to determine which method was best. Top engineers judged the competition which had a top prize of £500. In spite of a total of 10 locomotives entering, on the day of the Trials only 5 were able to attempt the tests. The only engine to complete the trials was ‘The Rocket’.
The Rocket was a locomotive designed and built by George and Robert Stephenson. It ran at an average speed of 12 miles per hour with a top speed of 30 miles an hour. The Rocket was awarded the prize money and perhaps more importantly, the contract to construct locomotive engines for the Railway company.
