    Have you sprained your ankle?

If you have ever sprained your ankle, no matter what the circumstances, then you will already be aware that it can be a very painful experience. Even relatively minor sprains can mean that you have to reduce your physical exertions and rest up for a while.

While such injuries can often be inconvenient there is nothing for it but to accept that you put a foot wrong and have to pay the price. But what about if you think the accident was someone else’s fault? What if you tripped over a poorly maintained pathway? Or fell over something that someone, perhaps a shop assistant or tradesman had carelessly left lying around? In such situations as these you may feel that the accident was not your fault and you shouldn’t just have to put up with the pain.

    Types of Ankle Sprain

You may be surprised to know that there are actually three different types of ankle sprain.

    • Grade 1 – this is the mildest type of ankle sprain injury that you can receive. This is usually caused as result of a slight twisting of the ankle, perhaps on an uneven pathway or raised ironworks. While it may be an initially painful injury, it should heal on its own with no need for treatment and no longer lasting weakness or instability.
    • Grade 2 – slightly more serious than a grade 1 sprain this can involve a minor tear, or fundamental damage to the ligament in your ankle itself. While not always the case, such an injury may result in longer term damage and pain as well as a weakness to the ankle.
    • Grade 3 – this is the most serious type of ankle sprain you can suffer. If you have a grade 3 injury then the ligament in your ankle will actually have been torn. It can take many weeks to recover from this type of injury and there will always be instability in the affected area.
