    Balancing work and play

    If you are working full time then it may be difficult for you to balance your work and leisure time so that you truly feel as though you are enjoying your life rather than just working all the time to make money. Those in high pressure jobs, the self-employed and those running companies and businesses often find that they don’t have enough to time to enjoy themselves and get all of the work done that they need to, whilst those with pressurising bosses may also find that they are overworked and under-played! Here are some tips for finding the balance.

    • Make lists. Put together a ‘to do’ list which lists not only everything that needs to be done for work, but also things that you want to do. Intersperse these work and play items on your list and then carry them out in order, giving as much priority to the things that you want to do, as to the things that you have to do.
    • Take some time each week to do nothing. This does not mean to sit and stare into space, but just have some time set aside where you can literally do anything you please. Sleep in, take a bath or go for a walk. Just having time that isn’t scheduled can take a lot of pressure off.
    • Take some time off. If you have just completed a big project, or a period of working very hard, then reward yourself with a couple of days off. You can use this time to catch up with household chores, but don’t use ALL of this time to do chores. Remember that relaxation is as important for your health as eating well and doing exercise.
    • Try not to worry. If you feel that you have not done things that need doing, or that something is coming up that you may not be able to succeed with, try to put it out of your mind until something needs to be done about it. Worrying does nothing but stress you out.
