How do I know if I have a broken collarbone?

A broken collarbone, or clavicle as it’s also known, happens mainly in car crashes or if you fall directly onto it. You might know if you have a broken collarbone because:

    • There is pain in the area
    • You can see a bump or swelling in the collarbone
    • You can’t lift your arm properly
    • You can hear a grinding noise if you move your arm
    • You have a sagging arm and shoulder.

If you suspect a broken collarbone, get in touch with a medical professional and they can check it and give you an x-ray. They will also be able to prescribe painkillers.

You can’t put a broken collar bone in a cast or bandage it up, but keeping your arm in a sling will make it more comfortable and can help it to heal straight. It will heal on its own, although your doctor might want you to check in to make sure it is all going well.

Can I still work with a broken collarbone?

It depends on your job, but a broken collarbone can be very painful and may stop you from working. If it is on the side you usually write with, or you need to use your hands a lot, it can be a problem. Also, you will need to rest your arm and keep it as still as possible. This all means it may be necessary or sensible to take a few weeks off until it is better.

But I don’t get sick pay
