The Antonine Wall
Did you know that East Dunbartonshire is home to the famous Antonine Wall? The wall was constructed under the orders of Emperor Antoninus Pius in 142 CE as a frontier barrier of the Roman Empire. It was originally intended to replace Hadrian’s wall which was located just under 100 miles to the south. It was built of stone and turf and was around 39 miles long. A large and deep ditch was excavated on the northern aspect of the wall, to increase security. The wall contained a total of 16 forts and today the best preserved is the Rough Castle Fort.
Despite taking 12 years to build, the wall was only used for 20 years. The wall was under continued attack by the Caledonians, leading to the name Caledonia for the area north of the wall. Due to this sustained attack, after 20 years, the soldiers were moved from the Antonine Wall and back to protect Hadrian’s Wall in the south. Several years later, Emperor Severus deployed troops back to Antonine Wall to carry out repairs and to protect the northern frontier, but this occupation lasted only for a few years and after that it was never used for military purposes again.
