Dundee City No Win No Fee*

Keep your child safe from burns

Children are masters at getting into everything, and they seem to get especially curious or naughty just when it’s really important for them to stay safe. To keep your child safe from burns, consider the following points.

Make sure that you keep an eye on both your cooking and your child at the same time. Don’t try to do either when you’re drunk or have taken drugs, as your concentration will be affected. At the minimum you may have burned food, but much worse, it could be a burned child instead. Don’t leave the food or cooker unattended.

Make sure that pan handles all face inwards, so that your child cannot pull them down onto themselves.

Don’t let children climb on kitchen tops and counters while you are cooking, and make sure if they are old enough that they know that kitchens are not places to play.

Smoke Alarms Save Lives

Install a smoke alarm, check regularly that it works, and do not take the batteries out for any reason, even for a moment.

Make sure that everyone knows how to safely get out of the house if your smoke alarm goes off, and where you will meet outside.

Have a thermostat on the hot water so that it can’t heat to above a certain temperature. Always check the heat of a bath before you put the child into it.

If Your Child is Burned

Immediately run cold water over the injury. If your child is burned or scalded over a large area, put them in the bath or shower and keep the cold water going. Running water is much better than still as it stays cold.

Even water that doesn’t seem that hot to you can scald a child’s delicate skin, so if there is the slightest chance that they are injured do this. It is better to be safe than sorry, and you will not regret time spent preventing worse injury.

Then get them to a hospital. Either call an ambulance or call ahead to let them know you are coming. They will be able to give you help and advice.
