    49-year-old worker suffers life-threatening injuries

A 49-year-old maintenance engineer suffered a life-threatening and life changing injury at a well-known food manufacturing company in Norfolk. He was servicing a potato peeling machine at the time. He accidentally dropped a bolt which fell into the slurry pump beneath the peeler. Before commencing the service operation, the engineer had isolated the potato peeling machine from its power supply. What he failed to realise was that the slurry pump was actually a totally separate machine. As he put his hand into the pump, it activated and severed off his hand.

When the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) investigated the incident, they found that the grate of the slurry pump had been removed. It had in actual fact been missing for some period of time. The absence of this grate allowed the service engineer to reach inside of the pump. This was fortunate for the engineer who was hurt.

Following the horrendous accident, the injury victim was rushed to hospital. He remained there for two weeks. He endured eight separate operations on the remaining stump of his arm. The man is now unable to drive. He can no longer carry out many of the day-to-day activities that he used to. The horrific injury has changed his life forever.

At the hearing, the film company entered a guilty plea for breaching Regulation 11(1) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998. As a consequence of this, they were fined £50,000. They were also instructed to pay costs of a further £9,661. This meant that the engineer was duly compensated for his injuries and suffering.
